ANRA Finals / Farwell LACR

ANRA Finals / Farewell LACR
Last weekend I had the pleasure of being apart of the last event that ANRA will hold at the Los Angeles County Raceway located in Palmdale, Ca.

ANRA held their two day event last Saturday and Sunday. A lot of racers showed up to participate and to say thank you to Bernie Longjohn and LACR for being there for us racers all this time. We went up to LACR to finish off both my brothers last three passes each so they could finalize their requirements for NHRA. Saturday, my brother Scott, drove our 1938 Fiat Topollino Altered. He was so anxious to go down the track and he did just that. Scott took it easy and just got used to the car. He learned to have respect for the Fiat as it doesn't always want to go straight down the track. Congratulations Scott, you did very well in the car and you handled yourself like a pro.

The next day we decided to concentrate on my brother Mark as he was finishing his last three passes in our front engine dragster. Mark was nervous from the day before but he made the decision to drive on Sunday and I'm glad he did. Mark blasted down the track on his first pass Sunday afternoon to an 8.68 seconds at 155mph. His second pass was an all time best for the dragster at 8.55 seconds at 155mph. His last pass unfortunately was not as fast. He got out of the groove and lost traction, lost fire and shut down creeping to a holt at the finish line. Even when you think the dragster always goes straight, it finds a way to keep your attention. Congratulations Mark on a job well done.

I would just like to add that it was a lot of fun to watch my brothers drive the cars and get down the track safely. I love to drive both our race cars, but watching my brothers make bitchen passes in either car was just as exciting as driving. I love this sport and hope that we as a family never have to stop racing.

See you at the next big event,
Jason Spence

John Force clinched a record 14th NHRA Funny Car Championship

John Force clinched a record 14th NHRA Funny Car Championship Sunday by beating closest pursuer Ron Capps in the second round of the 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Force, who this year had lost five of six previous meetings with Capps, directed his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang down a tricky left lane in 4.742 seconds at 326.95 mph to turn back Capps' Brut Dodge, which lost traction and trailed at 5.262, 204.29 mph.

Congratulations to all the teams at John Force Racing for a very exciting year of racing.

ANRA Finals/LACR closing

ANRA Finals Sat & Sun November 18th & 19th
Los Angeles County Raceway is closing it's doors - LACR

LACR has had a long lasting affair with southern Californians over the past 40 years. LACR is probably the most active sportsman dragstrip in southern California and we appreciate how long we were able to race at this facility. Most people complain about how windy it is, or, how the track isn't prepped well enough. The bottom line is that LACR has welcomed all of us racers and spectators and given us a place to race and hang out.

I remember like it was yesterday. My first time we ever went to LACR with our first dragster. We had this 1950's original Dragmaster chassis that was on loan from Dennis Garrett out of Ridgecrest, Ca. We took that car up to LACR and my Dad went out and made his first pass. When we got back to the pits, Bernie came out and jumped in the car and started pointing out things that were wrong with the car. Bernie wasn't upset, he was honest with us. He told us that he loved the car and that if we got those problems fixed we could run the car. So, we kept the car running slower than 9.99 seconds and everything was cool. Both my brother and my Dad drove that car for awhile until giving the Dragmaster chassis back to Dennis and eventually buying our Fiat out at the Long Beach Swap Meet.

The Fiat was kind of the same deal. Bernie didn't jump into the car but he did ask "who was driving", my Dad said that my brother Scott was. Bernie then said that my Dad had to make the first few shake down passes before Scott could drive the car since altereds are so unpredictable. Dad made a few runs in the Fiat and had a blast. Scott then hopped in the car and made a few passes while carding a best e.t. of about 9.90 at the time. It was a very exciting time for us all and LACR and Bernie made it all possible.

Thank You to Bernie and all of the LACR faculty for keeping everyone safe at the track and for providing us with a nice family atmosphere to enjoy ourselvesin while at the track.
